The Durfee High softball team turned in an outstanding performance to open its 2022 season, as the Hilltoppers dominated visiting Bishop Connolly, 6-1 at the Matthew Kuss Middle School field.
Sadie Fitzgerald put Durfee ahead, 2-0 with a pair of RBI in the second inning. Freshman Rachael Silva then beat out an infield hit to knock in a runner from third and put the Toppers up, 3-0.
The big blow of the game though was freshman first baseman Katerina Rumsey’s bases loaded line shot blast over the right fielder’s head that cleared the bases and put Durfee up, 6-0. The Cougars added a run in the later innings that were affected by some rain showers and wind.
Brooke Silvia got the start for Durfee. She pitched three scoreless innings before giving way to Emily Curran. Silvia also came back to close out the game in the seventh.
